Description

The New Orleans muffuletta is a culinary masterpiece featuring layers of cold cuts and vibrant olive salad, all enclosed in a round sesame-seeded bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (10-inch) round Italian sesame bread
  • ½ cup Greek olives
  • ½ cup green olives (pimento-stuffed)
  • ½ cup pickled Italian vegetables
  • ⅓ cup olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon capers
  • ¼ cup flat-leaf parsley
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 4 oz Genoa salami
  • 4 oz Mortadella
  • 2 oz Prosciutto
  • 4 oz Capicola
  • 4 oz Provolone cheese
  • 4 oz Mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the olive salad by mixing olives, pickled veggies, olive oil, garlic, capers, parsley, and spices. Let it marinate for at least 2 hours.
  2. Slice the sesame bread horizontally and brush both sides with olive oil.
  3. Spread a thick layer of olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
  4. Layer ¼ lb of Genoa salami, followed by ⅛ lb of Provolone cheese, then ¼ lb of Mortadella, followed by ⅛ lb of Mozzarella cheese, and finally ¼ lb of Capicola or deli ham.
  5. Place the top half of the bread over the layers and gently press down.
  6. Let the assembled muffuletta rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.

Notes

For best flavor, let the muffuletta rest for 1-2 hours before serving. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 30 days.
