The New Orleans muffuletta is a culinary masterpiece featuring layers of cold cuts and vibrant olive salad, all enclosed in a round sesame-seeded bread.

- 1 (10-inch) round Italian sesame bread
- ½ cup Greek olives
- ½ cup green olives (pimento-stuffed)
- ½ cup pickled Italian vegetables
- ⅓ cup olive oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon capers
- ¼ cup flat-leaf parsley
- 1 teaspoon celery seed
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 oz Genoa salami
- 4 oz Mortadella
- 2 oz Prosciutto
- 4 oz Capicola
- 4 oz Provolone cheese
- 4 oz Mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the olive salad by mixing olives, pickled veggies, olive oil, garlic, capers, parsley, and spices. Let it marinate for at least 2 hours.
- Slice the sesame bread horizontally and brush both sides with olive oil.
- Spread a thick layer of olive salad on the bottom half of the bread.
- Layer ¼ lb of Genoa salami, followed by ⅛ lb of Provolone cheese, then ¼ lb of Mortadella, followed by ⅛ lb of Mozzarella cheese, and finally ¼ lb of Capicola or deli ham.
- Place the top half of the bread over the layers and gently press down.
- Let the assembled muffuletta rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving.
Notes
For best flavor, let the muffuletta rest for 1-2 hours before serving. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 30 days.
